Shooting a Superstar

The local theatre troupe, Warren Players, is mounting a production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar at Struthers Library Theatre. Opening next month.

Director Deb Murphy asked me to produce the publicity images for the show - so this week, we shot the initial cast announcement photo, as well as the images for the poster, programs and advertisements.

Me and Logan Beard, who plays Jesus, being super serious:

I wanted the main images to have a very graphic feel to them. When I researched other posters for JCS, they typically stick to text-only versions, or pull from the old movie posters in some way. I wanted to rely heavily on the texture and tone of the crown of thorns, and above all wanted to keep it simple since the subject matter already carries with it all manner of emotion.

Here are the two images I ended up using:

For the geeks, Nikon D800, 85mm f/1.4 at 1.4, ISO 100, 2-stop ND filter and a single speedlight through an octobox.
